You can completely automate the process of learners earning a certificate after they complete some specific requirements in your course. This means that after learners complete activities or earn high enough scores, they can open a Certificate activity where they can generate a certificate for themselves.
Requirements to earn a certificate
In order to set you a certificate with requirements, you'll need to determine what learners will need to do in order to earn a certificate. Some options for requirements include:
Learners must earn a minimum score on a quiz
Learners must earn a minimum score on a review activity (instructor review, peer review, self review)
Learners must "mark as complete" specific activities in the course
Learners must participate in a discussion activity
Learners must complete a survey (you could use a Form activity for this)
Any combination of these, and more!
Once you determine the requirements to earn a certificate, go ahead and create those components in your course. After those activities exist in your course, you can start to set up the certificate process.
How to set up an automation for learners to earn a certificate
We will use a Scoring activity and rules for prerequisites to set up the process for learners to conditionally earn certificates.
Select + Add New and choose the Scoring activity.
Open the settings for the activity and choose the inputs for your Scoring activity.
Inputs should be the requirements that you determine learners must complete first. Inputs can be scores (such as on quizzes or reviews) or based on completion.
Set the setting for incomplete score inputs to count as 0%.
Set the completion threshold as the percent that learners need to achieve in order to earn a certificate.
(Optional) If you want to hide this Scoring activity from learners, set a visibility rule based on user type and toggle off "Learners".
Select + Add New and choose the Certificate activity.
Set a prerequisite rule on the Certificate activity. First, decide if you want a visibility rule or a completion rule. Then, select + Add rule and choose Prerequisites. Select + Add prerequisite and choose the Scoring activity that you just set up.
A visibility rule means that learners won't see a certificate activity until they earn the score you set in the scoring activity.
A completion rule means that learners will see the title of the certificate activity on the course sidebar, but learners will be locked from generating their certificate until they earn the score you set in the scoring activity.
Take a look at a few examples below.

After you complete the set up, we recommend testing the functionality by previewing the course as a test learner.
