In some cases, you may want to show learners the activity description of an activity, even if the activity is locked. Otherwise, you might want to hide the content in the activity description until the activity is unlocked for them.

By default, locked activities will still show the activity description to learners. Learners won't be able to complete the activity, but they will be able to read content, view videos, etc.

What it looks like for learners if an activity description is visible

Note that the learner can read the text with the instructions for this activity. Since the activity is locked by a prerequisite, they cannot complete it yet.

What it looks like for learners if an activity description is hidden

Note that learners cannot see the description of the activity. They can still see the title of the activity in the course sidebar, and they can see the title of the activity. They also see a message that "Content is hidden while the activity is locked".

There are many ways to lock activities from learners, including setting prerequisites, opening dates, using tags or manual selection, and setting deadlines.

How to change the activity description visibility

You can determine if learners can see the descriptive content in your activity with the Activity description visibility setting.

  1. Select Settings and choose Completion. You'll see the rule causing the activity to be locked. Click on the gear symbol next to your rule.

  2. Select if learners can or cannot see the activity description.

  3. The rule will save automatically.

💡Tip: If you want to preview the setting from a learner's perspective, you can add test users to preview your course.

Do you instead want to hide the activity completely from learners, including the title in the course sidebar? Use visibility rules to hide the activity completely.
